HIS was founded in 1976 by Christians Don and Rose Benner as they distributed literature and cared for needy children at the start of a thirteen year civil war. They are now the largest importer of Spanish Bibles, books, Sunday School curriculum, and Christian music in El Salvador.
There are seventy children—from newborns to eighteen years old—in the Shalom Children’s Home near Santo Tomas. The children receive shelter, clothing, food, medical care, education, and life skills training in a Christian environment. All of the children are supported through a child sponsorship program via HIS.
HIS administers a bilingual Christian education to both the children in the home as well as the El Salvadoran community, totaling more than 350 children. This has proven to be an effective evangelism tool to the children and their families.
Our team will visit HIS for ten days and assist the orphanage with construction projects near the Home and School, teaching English to the children, clerical work in the office, child care for the younger residents, and street ministry to local El Salvadoran residents. We will also be ministering directly to the children through original dramas, story-telling, games, and everyday actions.
