Day 7 - Church Marathon PDF Print E-mail
Written by Austin Hines
Monday, 19 May 2008 09:07

Today was a busy day, but we got to see God at work here in El Salvador.

We all put on nice clothes today and went to Juan's home church, Followers of Jesus (ingles translation). The building was small, but the sanctuary was air conditioned, and the hearts were amazingly warm and welcoming. We got hugged and kissed at every turn.

Oso, Venga! PDF Print E-mail

I would like to start out by informing you that I am not "allowed" by our "doctor" to eat most of the produce that grows in this country. For anyone familiar with my dining habits, you will note that this isn't something I would ordinarily consider a problem. It only becomes so when I find out that there is a pequeño pepper bush ( the kind with delicious peppers that are smaller than most pills) growing right outside of our apartment. Now a cook staff who is preparing dishes for 70+ little kids isn't likely to put much spice into the meals, and those given to me are the same. I am starving for spice, sated only by the peculiar appearance of a jug of Pace® Medium-Heat Salsa. Not enough. I'm being taunted every time I walk through the front door by this tantalizing, possibly debilitating pepper. The bacon served this morning was a small comfort, but not enough. More reparations are demanded.

Anyways, I've been spending the days playing TerrorBear with a gaggle of five-year-old girls. It doesn't amount to anything more than me growling a lot and chasing them until they can claim sanctuary with any of the hermanas or the female missionaries in the immediate vicinity. Fun for everyone involved. Also, I've yet to find anyone here who can beat me at tetherball. They've certainly got me beat in futbol, but if any of these little kids step inside the tetherball ring with me, they know that they're about to be dust.

With as many parts of my anatomy that already hurt, I don't feel like I should add carpal tunnel to the list, so here is the cutoff.

Sincerely,

Zach Efron.

Salvadoreño Haircut PDF Print E-mail

So I'm about to go out to a unisex salon at the end of the street to get a haircut. What better way to remember a trip than by being forced to see its repercussions every day in the mirror for a month?

To be continued...

Austin HinesFear not! We have arrived safely in El Salvador, and have now figured out how to use the internet here! Blog updates will come shortly, after we figure out which pictures we want to use :) Please be praying for us tonight as we lead our first of two big devotionals. Tonight we'll talk to all the kids about the story of Mephibosheth and being adopted into the family of God!

Day 1 Blog - The Flight PDF Print E-mail
Written by Austin Hines

It's been a long day of flying. I got to sit by some strangers and have some fun conversations, but mostly, I did a lot of sleeping and taking of pictures when I had a window seat. On the flight into El Salvador, the plane was so empty we could sit wherever we wanted. I took my favorite seat, a window behind the wing, and I was able to get some truly beautiful photos, especially as we passed through a thunderhead on the way into San Salvador.
